Philanthropy

In 2010, Beta Upsilon kicked off its first annual Gamma Games in the fall of 2010. Fraternities were invited to compete in a three day competition consisting of volleyball, relay races, and flag football. The winners received a barbeque with our chapter and a traveling trophy!

Profits from this philanthropy are split between Gamma Phi Beta's international philanthropy, Camp Fire USA and the Beta Upsilon chapter's local philanthopy Manhattan Boys & Girls Club.

Through the success of Gamma Games the Beta Upsilon Chapter was able to raise over $4000!

History

Gamma Phi Beta at Kansas State During the week of October 14th through the 21st of 1956, six women were organizing a colonization program to establish a Gamma Phi Beta chapter at Kansas State University. This colonization consisted of tea parties in the Union followed by appointments and in-depth interviews with each potential member.Of the two hundred women who had registered in Anderson Hall for the opportunity to become Gamma Phi Betas, only thirty-six remained after the Gamma Phis from KU made their final selections. Thirty-two of the original thirty-six were initiated into Gamma Phi Beta following the five months of pledge ship. The Beta Upsilon chapter of Gamma Phi Beta became the tenth sorority on the Kansas State Campus.The Gamma Phi Betas at Kansas State University were soon-after presented with their first major dilemma. Where were these girls going to live? Renting a house on 17th Street easily solved this problem, but brought up another, more important problem. Where were these girls going to live permanently? The ladies finally agreed on a local architect and an empty lot northwest of campus, on Todd Road. After two tries, the architect and the girls agreed on a plan that was quickly put into action.The Gamma Phis held their first Rush, during the fall of 1957, in the house on 17th street, because the new house was still under construction. The house was said to have shocked the neighborhood because of its modern styling. The forty-six girls moved in, and had a few difficulties adjusting to lack of telephones and furniture. Because the house was completed in January, the ground was still frozen so cables could not be laid until later that spring. The lack of furniture did not cause too much distress for the innovative Gamma Phis and their creative alums. Although somewhat rustic, dining room tables made of doors proved to be quite functional. By Rush Week 1958, the only furniture that had been delivered for the second floor were the mattresses.With Rush Week upon them, the girls knew that they needed furniture in the living room even if there was none in the rest of the house. The alums came through again by loaning some of their own furniture as well as finding stores to temporarily donate during the week.The charter members of Beta Upsilon Chapter had begun a tradition of involvement in all areas of campus activities. At the same time they, along with the alums, assumed the responsibility of providing a base on which to build the chapter for years to come. They were involved in everything. "Youd have thought there were seventy-six of them rather then thirty-six~, is how the supervisor of the colonization described them. And so with hard work and dedication, the Gamma Phis at Kansas State had arrived!Initiation began the real growth of our chapter here at K-State. On the evening of March 22nd, 1957, at the Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, twenty girls from the Sigma Chapter at KU and the original Manhattan alums initiated the girls into the sorority. Each girl contributed an original song and a decorated paddle. Following initiation was a banquet at the Wareham Hotel. Among those present at the banquet were Mrs. George Docking (the First Lady of Kansas) and Mrs. Gerald Arnold (the International Grand President). The chapter at Kansas State University was designated Beta Upsilon and Mrs. Arnold presented Beta Upsilons president with their charter. The weekend festivities ended Sunday with a tea and reception in the Student Union.

2012 Recruitment Information

Gamma Phi Beta will be participating in Kansas State Universitys formal recruitment in August 2012. Throughout the week, women interested in becoming a part of Greek life at KSU will have the opportunity to attend Recruitment parties at Gamma Phi Beta and the other ten Panhellenic sororities. Registration information is available via the KSU Greek Affairs website at www.ksu.edu/greek.

Recommendations

Any Gamma Phi Beta alumna may write a recommendation for a potential new member participating in Recruitment. Although recommendations are not required to go through Recruitment, current Gamma Phi members use these recommendations as an opportunity to get to know these women before they arrive for Recruitment. Gamma Phi Beta International History

During her time at Syracuse University, Dr. Haven's daughter asked three friends to assist her in organizing a society for women students. Gamma Phi Beta was founded by Helen M. Dodge, Frances E. Haven, E. Adeline Curtis, and Mary A. Bingham.

On November 11, 1874, the four founders met in Dr. J. J. Browns study for the first official meeting of Gamma Phi Beta. The University Herald, Syracuse Universitys newspaper, reported the following spring, "A new ladies society made its appearance at the close of last term, and is to be known as Gamma Phi Beta . . . The ladies have started on the right principle, are select in the choice of members, and we see no reason why a prosperous future is not in store for Gamma Phi Beta.

In a society where women were discouraged from entering college due to their "insufficient brainpower" and "delicate health," four women from Syracuse University came together to form a society they named Gamma Phi Beta. Now, more than 130 years later, we celebrate their vision and dedication and all who have followed and built Gamma Phi Beta into one of the largest and most well-respected Sororities in the world.In the 1870's, Dr. E. O. Haven, Chancellor of Syracuse University, enrolled his daughter at a time when very few women were welcomed at colleges and universities. Dr. Haven believed that his daughter and other young women deserved to have the advantages of studying higher education.

The Gamma Phi Beta House

The Gamma Phi Beta Sorority has a beautiful house, located on Todd Road. In 2000, the second floor was completely renovated and offers a variety of living spaces including: two-girl sleep/study, four-girl sleep/study and three and four girl study rooms with adjacent sleeping dorms. In the last few years, our TV room, library and chapter room have been renovated.
